Comic Magazines

If comic magazines have managed to survive in the continuous flood of computerized cartoons (although truth be told, it is surprising how nowadays with all available technology, some televised cartoons have such awful graphics), they simply must be good. It’s no lie that the kids’ market segment has been successfully taken over by video games, while teenagers mostly indulge in porn that they can acquire unhindered. But comics preserve that authenticity, that je-ne-sais-quoi and people always come back to them as a refuge from the rainfall of artificially created amusement. They are the assiduous, spontaneous work of a creative mind, instead of collages of sellable bits and bobs put together by some producers over a boardroom table, while estimating the profit each aspect would bring. Aside from the comic book strips themselves, the magazines often include author interviews, readers’ comments and ratings, news regarding events organised by fan clubs, suggestions and so on.

There is something for the devourers of every genre, from science-fiction, a comics favourite, to comedy, adventure, mystery and drama. Before moving on to the big screens, all super-heroes were “born” within the pages of comic books and carried many to a world where everything was possible. And although now superheroes can rarely win over kids’ hearts without an M16 in their hand, whilst teenagers only give them the time of day if they are female, half-nude and large-breasted, some still preserve the thrill of reliving the “eternal battle between the forces of good and evil”, without compromising their symbols of virtue by tainting them with worldly dirt. The comic book hero admirer is the hopeless romantic and idealist, one of the few that haven’t yet given in to cliches and the cheap stereotypes of good and everything positive.

Unlike stories transposed onto television or cinema screens, which benefit from many props such as attractive characters, suggestive music, dynamism and an impressive rhetoric, comics have to be extremely clever and lose the embellishments to catch the very essence of the moment they are trying to capture. Some people wrongly scorn abbreviated creations such as comics or epigrams, for instance compared to films and sonnets, but that is just the misleading confusion between quantity and quality. Far from being the result of a lot less work, such creations are often pure genius, as they manage to compress an idea by filtering out the futile artistic garments and leaving the nucleus of their art exposed, reachable and much brighter through that.

As you’d expect, the classics are always there to find as a stubborn continuance of a less digitally sophisticated yet morally genuine time, and the wit rises up to the same old standards. Their characters, some of them so common at first sight, have passed into immortality as they differentiate themselves from those of today’s entertainment industry, that are so quickly replaced by others with more commercial value and thus become the perfect exponents of kitsch. In fact, one might dare think that some old cartoon characters are more true to themselves than some flesh and blood occupants of today’s concert stages and cinema screens.
